On December 3rd, EWB UOIT held its first Acoustic Café event raising awareness for the club and Fair Trade products through a free Fair Trade coffee and chocolate giveaway. Also a fundraiser, the event raised money that will go towards chapter fucntioning and events next semester!
Special thanks go out to Durham College’s Music Business and Management program for providing the equipment and both MBM and UOIT Poets Society for performers.
The names of some of the performers will be added shortly!
On Tuesday November 24th, EWB UOIT held a workshop featuring a former EWB Junior Fellow (summer 2009) and current UofT co-President Mike Klassen. Running a workshop he himself had made, it was the perfect compliment to the workshop held a week earlier. The topic of his workshop was his work with sanitation issues in Zambia and featured exclusive video shot at his workplace over the summer, as well as video of his Zambian associate Arnold who spoke about the particulars of sanitation.

We will be having another workshop next Tuesday (the 17th) at 11am to 12 in UL11 to talk about the work that EWB does overseas and the potential of students from our school going over the summer to work with agriculture, water and sanitation and infrastructure. I really hope everyone with interest in this comes out. You don’t even have to be interested in volunteer work, but come to get a good sense of how engineering skills can be used towards human development.
Update: So as I am preparing this workshop I realized there is no way I can print everything for everyone. Since we are a laptop university I have simply uploaded or linked all the materials you need here!
Thank you all for the really good turn out for our FIRST WORKSHOP of the year!!!
We hope everyone learned and picked up the spirit of philanthropy in engineering. Hope to see you guys on the next coming workshops and events!
Hi guys! Get your thinking hats and activity gears ready as we’re having another workshop night!
When: Friday, November 6, 2009
Where: G213 (tentative)
See you guys there!!!
With Halloween fast approaching, the EWB UOIT execs have been making plans to go around the neighbourhood for a little trick-or-treating, how ever instead of collecting candy from houses, we will actually be going door to door giving away candy!
The Reverse Trick-or-Treat is a campaign that EWB supports that has volunteers across Canada giving away free Fair Trade chocolate and a little bit of information to go along with it. Have you ever given much thought to the chocolate you buy? The average person doesn’t know much about Fair Trade and are surpised to learn that the farmers who grow the cocoa and sugar cane s for our chocolate, often don’t get such a sweet deal.
With that in mind, the UOIT Chapter Initiative will be going door-to-door, residence to residence and all around campus giving away the 888 pieces of Fair Trade chocolate that were graciously donated to us for this campaign. Be on the look out for us on the 29th, 30th and of course, Halloween night.
